CAQH credentialing is how most commercial payers collect a standard provider application for network participation. For behavioral health clinics, an incomplete or stale CAQH ProView profile is one of the top reasons enrollments stall — and billable time is lost while a new LCSW, LPC, or psych NP waits.
What is CAQH?
CAQH (Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare) operates CAQH ProView, a shared provider data hub. Payers pull applications from ProView instead of (or in addition to) custom paper packets. When clinics say "we're stuck in CAQH," they usually mean:
- The provider's ProView profile is incomplete
- Attestations expired
- Practice locations / taxonomy don't match the payer application
- Supporting documents (licenses, malpractice, W-9) are missing or outdated
CAQH credentialing vs payer enrollment
| Step | What happens | Who owns it |
|---|---|---|
| CAQH ProView setup | Identity, licenses, education, practice info, attest | Provider + clinic admin |
| Primary-source verification | Boards, OIG/SAM, NPI, etc. | Payer / CVO / software |
| Payer-specific enrollment | Panel status, effective dates, contracts | Payer + clinic |
CAQH is often necessary but not sufficient. You still need each plan's enrollment path (and Medicare PECOS / Medicaid where relevant). See payer enrollment vs credentialing.
Why behavioral health clinics feel this more
- Multi-license clinicians (state board + counseling board)
- Group NPI / rendering provider combinations
- Telehealth locations across states
- High turnover → constant re-enrollment
Common CAQH delays (and fixes)
- Expired attestation — re-attest on a schedule; don't wait for a denial letter
- Wrong taxonomy — align NPPES taxonomy with BH specialty
- Practice address mismatch — billing vs service location inconsistencies
- Missing malpractice / claims history — upload current COI early
- Name / DOB mismatches — match license and NPI exactly
How long does CAQH-related enrollment take?
CAQH setup can be hours to days. Payer enrollment after CAQH still commonly runs 30–90 days depending on the plan and state. Start CAQH the day a provider accepts an offer — not the day they start seeing patients. More on timelines: How long does credentialing take?.
How CREDSClinic helps with CAQH credentialing
CREDSClinic is provider credentialing software for behavioral health and independent clinics:
- Source checks (NPI, boards, OIG/SAM, and more) so packets are cleaner before payers review
- Workflows aligned with CAQH-ready data collection
- Transparent per-credential pricing — not a hospital enterprise suite
- Built for the 30–90 day race where missing documents kill revenue
